Basic After Care
NOTE: PLEASE do not touch piercing without throughly washing hands with antibacterial soap.
Clean piercing 2 – 3 times a day with warm water and Antibacterial soap or sea salt soaks if recommended by your Body Piercer. (Remember rotating jewelry at any time can cause scar tissue and migration.) If you notice body fluids dried on jewelry or skin, DO NOT PICK WITH FINGERNAILS! Wash with antibacterial soap and do not rotate jewelry!
Sea Salt Soaks - 2 times a day for 10 minutes. After showers to help pull any residual soap residue from the piercing. (Mixture of 4 Tablespoons of Natural Sea Salt to 1 Gallon of Distilled water).
Oral Piercings: (including tongue, Web, Monroe, Cheek, Labret and Lip.) After smoking, eating, or drinking anything other than water or ice – rinse with Listerine. Keep all foreign objects out of your mouth, they all carry bacteria. Refrain from oral sex for 4-6 weeks. It is common to experience swelling, cramping in your jaw and your tongue to feel uncoordinated. To minimize these conditions gently suck on ice chips and/or take Ibuprofen. Never leave out jewelry, these piercings can close overnight.
Genital Piercings: Follow instructions under Basic After care. Refrain from sexual activity until completely healed. If you do decide to have sex before you are healed we suggest the use of a lubricated condom and to clean the piercing directly afterwards.
Helpful Tips for Proper Healing
Navel: Avoid tight belts, waistbands, and clothing. Avoid sports and bending at the waist.
Ear and facial: Shield piercings from hair spray and avoid getting lotion, make-up and other foreign substances in piercings. Make sure pillow cases are clean and changed frequently. Clean your telephone receiver inside and out with Lysol or other disinfectant. Do not use public telephones.
Nipple: Sleep in a cotton tank top or t-shirt especially if you have any pets that get on your bed.
Genital: Wear loose pants and cotton underwear. Avoid condoms and lubricants containing Nonoxynol 9 since it is very strong and can irritate healing piercings. Use water based lubricants such as KY Jelly.
Things to Avoid
Rubbing Alcohol: Very harsh and drying. Can slow healing and destroy newly forming tissue.
Hydrogen Peroxide: Also very harsh and can cause scar tissue to form with repeated use.
Antibiotic Ointments: These can clog your piercing and block necessary flow of oxygen.
Touching your piercing with unwashed hands: The main cause of infection is touching piercings with unwashed hands.
Swimming: hot tubs, soaking baths: Also carry bacteria and can cause infection.
Other people’s body fluids: Avoid until fully healed. Remember, your piercing is an open wound and you can exchange more than body fluids.
Over cleaning: Will damage the delicate tissue and cause irritations, delaying the healing process.
Advice from uneducated piercers and friends: Use common sense.
